Asus Laptop L410 Ultra Thin Laptop Review – Matthew Buzzi Matthew Buzzi, Senior Analyst, Hardware. My experience. I am one of the consumer PC experts in, especially I love PC games. For as long as I can remember, I have played on the computer, which eventually (like many) led me to build and upgrade my desktop. I’ve tested and reviewed many, many laptops and desktops over the years here, and I’m always happy to recommend a PC for your needs and budget. Read full bio

The Asus L410 is a very expensive PC, even among budget laptops, which compromises display and processing power to provide a user-friendly Windows machine with good battery life and useful ports.

Very affordable Windows 10 systems, even by the standards of other budget laptops. We consider budget laptops to be under $500, and the L410 model we reviewed (L410MA-DB02) costs more than half that at $295. Few selected Win 10 models (such as HP Stream 11) cost less than the new ones, and for that price you get a functional Windows 10 system with surprisingly strong construction, useful ports, and decent battery life. The screen quality leaves a lot to be desired, however, and anything other than the basic functions calls for a Celeron processor, 4GB of memory, and 64GB of storage. If you have more wiggle room in your budget, we recommend the MSI Modern 14. Mistakes are expected, though, and it’s one of the best options out there under $300.

The design of this laptop might not be the most impressive, but at first glance you wouldn’t think it’s a $265 laptop. This is partly thanks to the blue paint with a glossy finish, which adds a unique style to the budget range. Most of these laptops have black or gray rectangles, so I’m all about color. You’ll also notice one cool key: the Enter key is painted in yellow and green, just for fun.

The assembly itself is made of plastic, which may not surprise you with the price, but the overall quality is very good. It’s plastic, it’s light at 2.87 pounds, and the chassis measures 0.72 by 12.8 by 8.5 inches (HWD) with a 14-inch (measured diagonal) display. It combines a portable laptop, something that can be easily thrown into a bag or backpack without worrying about space or weight.

I expected the chassis to flex more when I put pressure on it, but the cover and keyboard are surprisingly strong. There is one

Flex when you press down on the middle of the keyboard, but it’s weak, and it doesn’t happen in normal use. The materials may not be of the highest quality, but the system doesn’t feel like it’s going to crack and it’s generally pretty solid.

The keys themselves aren’t very impressive, but they work. The stroke is shallow—the keys don’t travel very far when pressed before they hit the floor—and they’re soft to the touch. Again, it’s not surprising for the price (and it makes sense), but it’s important to remember where the impact comes from something that costs less, as it is.

Most of your marketing will include components, and we’ll get to that in a moment, but let’s move on to the touchpad. It is built like most budget touchpads: when you press it, the whole panel will press down, moving as one. It is slightly thinner than premium touchpads, invisible and very durable. However, it still works well and I put up with looser touchpads than this one.

Another obvious feature is the number pad that is drawn entirely on the touch pad. Obviously there is no place for a full-fledged number pad with real keys on a laptop this size, and on more expensive systems Asus uses an LED number pad on the touchpad, which you turn on and off with a button. Here, the numeric keypad is always visible and you just change it

And turn it off. You can use the touchpad normally when the number pad is on, but you can prevent accidental input by turning it off when not in use.

It’s probably a cheaper solution than a hidden LED installation, and it works. If you use the number pad a lot, you’re in luck here, especially since most laptops in this price range don’t.

The biggest drawback of physical contact is, unfortunately, exposure. It has a standard Full HD resolution (1920 by 1080 pixels), so it’s not that disappointing on paper. As with the recently reviewed budget Asus VivoBook 15, the quality is below average, which is even worse.

Their problems are slightly different. Where the VivoBook 15’s screen isn’t clear, the brightness isn’t very clear here, and even the head-on image quality isn’t sharp and clear. Viewing angles are not good – blurring and color changes appear immediately when you start looking at the screen at a narrow angle, and it does not match at all when you look at it. Overall, this is a weak panel that ruins an otherwise good build for the price.

Last but not least, channel options. The left side has a USB 2.0 port, a USB-C port, and an HDMI connector. On the right is a USB 3.0 port and an SD card slot. It’s not a great connector design, but it exceeds the basics, and the days of limited ports on budget laptops may be behind us if a system at this price does more than it needs. The system also supports 802.11ac Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

One important thing to note is that the laptop ships in Windows 10 S mode, a system for low-power laptops that is easy to run Windows Store apps. If you want to install other applications (as you can on any full Windows PC, and you may want to do it on this system), you will need to get a free upgrade to regular Windows 10 from the Windows Store.

I mentioned that there are some flaws in the choice of part, and indeed, this is a modest laptop. Running a full-featured Windows 10 laptop for less than $300 might be a success, but don’t expect top-of-the-line speed or performance. As mentioned earlier, this device has an Intel Celeron N4020 processor, 4GB of memory and 64GB of EMMC flash memory.

Before looking at the results, I can warn you that this processor will be slow – note that it is not even an Intel Core chip, but part of the low-powered Celeron line. You will find a few Core i3 units in some budget systems we compare the L410 to, but the Celeron will still be slower than that. See the table below for names and competition criteria. (See more about how we test laptops.)

All these machines are also cheap, in the same price range (with some differences). The most expensive is the aforementioned HP Stream 11, a small, low-powered laptop that costs only $199.99. The VivoBook 15 ($399.99) and the MSI Modern 14 ($449.99) are similar in terms of components, both good deals for what they offer, but in different sizes. The Dell Inspiron 15 3000 (3505) is another 15-inch laptop priced at $333 as tested, making it the second cheapest alternative here behind the Anthem.

PCMark 10 and 8 are complete performance packages developed by UL’s PC testing experts. The PCMark 10 test we run simulates a variety of real-world manufacturing and content creation processes. We use it to evaluate system performance for office-oriented tasks such as word processing, spreadsheet management, web browsing, and video conferencing. Meanwhile, PCMark 8 has a storage subtest that we use to evaluate the speed of the system’s boot disk. Both tests provide a proprietary numerical score; higher numbers are better.

Asus Zenbook Flip 13 Gets An Upgrade With Intel Ice Lake, Lpddr4x Ram

The PCMark 10 score defines the expectations for this system. It’s not a miracle machine, it matches the performance of other systems at a lower price, so you can see where the trade-off comes from. A Celeron chip, 4GB of RAM and fanless design can’t keep up, even with low-end AMD Athlon solutions and certainly not with Core i3 chips. It’s significantly faster than the other Celeron chip in the HP Stream 11, and the lack of fans means it runs quietly. For real office work, it’s the best available, but far from perfect.

On a more anecdotal basis, I found the basic features (using Windows Explorer for files and easy web browsing) to be perfect.
