The Inspiron 16 2-in-1 (7620) is Dell’s latest foray into the big-screen (some might say “too big”) 2-in-1 convertible category. It’s a clamshell adaptation of the traditional Inspiron 16 (7620) for those who really need the largest possible screen that can still be rotated 360 degrees for tablet use. At 5 pounds, the Inspiron 16 2-in-1 ($799.99 as tested; starts at $1,049.99) exceeds expectations that a convertible should be easy to handle and hold in tablet configuration. But if you often need to present in a classroom or conference room, put the unit in tent mode and share your screen with others, the 16-inch 2-in-1 format may be perfect.

The 7620 Inspiron 16 2-in-1 model comes with a Core i5 U-series (ultraportable class) in its base configuration. The system we tested has an upgraded Core i7-1260P with 16GB of RAM, a 512GB SSD, and integrated Intel Iris Xe graphics. Our test base is equipped with a Full HD screen, although 4K UHD is optional.

The Dell Inspiron 16 2-in-1 is large for a 2-in-1 convertible laptop, measuring 0.72 x 14.1 x 9.9 inches (HWD). So it makes sense that there’s plenty of space on the lower deck, with room for widely spaced keys, a roomy trackpad and a pair of speakers on either side of the keyboard. If this laptop ends up serving as the perfect desktop replacement, you might not lose out on a larger desktop monitor, due to the reduction in versatility and portability. If you need to share drawings or designs with others, the Inspiron’s ability to turn into a tablet or trade mode is a plus.

Typing at high speeds on the 7620 is a breeze. Although the keyboard is well designed, the vertical key travel is a bit shallow. The touch panel is very responsive and smooth to the touch thanks to the Mylar coating. In our tests, we were paired with an older laptop that used an older 720p webcam standard. That camera’s display, along with that of the Inspiron 16 2-in-1, was noticeably smoother even when viewed in a smaller window.
